Picture this: you’ve got a pipeline full of leads, ready for your sales team to call and convert. But as your team start responding, they notice that a lot of these leads are tenants who can’t authorise any work or changes to the home they rent.
Or, maybe they own the house but don’t have the budget to buy. Perhaps they were “just browsing” with no real intent to purchase, wondering how much things would cost if they were to go ahead.
Without a proper lead qualification process, you’ll be stuck chasing leads that simply aren’t ready to buy.
At Sales Fuel, we follow a step-by-step framework for pre-qualifying every lead we send to you. It’s how we filter the dead-end leads from the ready-to-close buyers. So, you’ll only get enquiries from high-intent leads who have viable projects, budgets, timeframes, and all the other qualities of a customer that’s ready to book an install.
Yes, the odd ‘dead lead’ still comes through, but that’s just human nature of real people filling in forms with the hope of getting a quick quote. Our qualification process helps us avoid this as much as possible!
Before we get into how we do it, let’s kick things off with a lead qualification definition.
What is Lead Qualification (and why is it important)?
Lead qualification is the process of identifying your most promising leads based on their buying intent, budget, project viability, timeframe, and other conversion signals.
Let’s say that a lead fills in the form on a targeted ad that we’ve created for you. We don’t just send you the lead straight away. We’ll ask them the right questions at certain points to make sure they’re the right fit for your products and services.
This differentiates from form-fill to hotkey, which is reflected in the price you pay.
These questions weed out customers who aren’t ready to buy (or, in some cases, were never going to buy in the first place!).
By removing unqualified leads from your pipeline, you can prioritise closing deals with leads who have a high chance of becoming paying customers.

Our Lead Qualification Checklist for Installers
Below, we’ve shared a lead generation checklist that covers the main questions we ask your leads before passing them over to you. We have different questions that align with the various industries we work with and the specific products they’re selling.
Do they have the authority to buy?
Tenants can’t authorise home improvements like solar panels, insulation installs, and kitchen or bathroom renovations. But it surely doesn’t stop them trying!
One of the first things we verify is whether the customer owns their property. This quickly filters out tenants who don’t have the decision-making power to authorise improvements.
Are they a sole or shared decision-maker?
For major improvements, like solar panels or external wall insulation, we ensure that all co-owners approve of the job before proceeding. This minimises any risk of work being challenged or voided, keeping you far, far away from potential legal disputes.
Is the property a listed building or in a conservation area?
Listed buildings and properties in conservation areas must navigate complex consents, permissions, and requirements before home improvements can be made. We verify that the property doesn’t fall into these categories to maintain lead quality and save you the headache.
Do they live within your target area?
We know that if you’re a small business based in Newcastle, you probably don’t want enquiries from homeowners living in Cornwall. The long-distance travel takes up a lot of time that could be spent carrying out installs in your local area.
You could complete 10 local jobs in the time it takes you to complete 1 long-distance job!
The same works for larger businesses. You may cover 90% of the UK, so you don’t want leads in the 10% you don’t!
We ask you what your target service area is when you buy, and then create local campaigns to attract homeowners living in that location. There’s no limit – you can target a postcode, town, city, county, or at entire region. It’s all about what works for you.
Our goal is to verify every lead’s address so that whatever your boundary is, you can be confident that the customer lives within it.
Do they have the budget available to buy?
If a customer simply doesn’t have the budget, no amount of sales effort can convince them to close the deal. That’s why we qualify affordability by looking at annual salary, CCJs, debt management plans, bankruptcy, and their available budget.
This confirms that the leads you get from us are in a financial position to afford your product. But even more than that, it ensures that potential customers understand the price range and are mentally prepared for the investment.
So, no more losing leads due to price objections or unrealistic budgets.
Are they getting quotes from other companies?
Multi-quote seekers are leads that request quotes from lots of different companies to find the cheapest option. Price is their #1 decision criteria, and you’ll have to lower yours considerably if you want to make the sale.
We help you avoid competitor price wars, low-margin sales and wasted sales effort by qualifying that the lead is a single-quote seeker. Essentially, we make sure they’re looking for a business they can trust to do a good job, not a cheap job.
Single-quote seekers have a much higher likelihood of converting, which is why targeting them is a critical component of our lead generation strategy.

Is their property suitable and is the project viable?
These two lead qualification questions go hand-in-hand. If the property doesn’t meet specific requirements for installs, then the project is simply unviable, and the lead can’t convert. So, we filter these leads out.
In the same vein, some projects are unviable purely because they’re unrealistic. Think: customers who want major renovations without considering structural integrity, space, or electrical circuiting.
Here’s an example of what we’d qualify for across some of our main products:
- For solar leads: Energy consumption and roof suitability, including the roof’s condition, orientation, pitch, shading, and measurements.
- For insulation leads: EPC ratings, fuel type, and any known damp, moisture, or structural issues.
- For windows & doors leads: The type of windows / doors they want and how many they want replacing.
- For ASHP leads: EPC ratings, outdoor space availability, and energy consumption.
- For boiler leads: The boiler’s age, condition, fuel type, and other factors depending on the service requested.
- For kitchen leads: The property type (semi-detached, flat, etc), along with project scope and scale, such as whether they want dry-fit installs or full renovations.
- For bathroom leads: The property type, project scale, and scope (e.g., walk-in shower installation, bath-to-shower conversion, or full refit).
- For roofing leads: Property type and roof type, along with age, access, structure, and project scope.
- For spray foam leads: Where the spray foam exists and the type of spray foam that needs to be removed.
- For bespoke leads: Property type and project scope, along with unique qualification questions depending on the product or service requested.
Are they looking to purchase within 1-3 months?
We ask this question to gauge whether the lead has an active plan to move forward with the install, or if they’re still milling about in the decision stage.
If the lead has a clear, short timeframe for purchasing, we’ll pass them over to you. If they don’t, we’ll do the nurturing so that you don’t have to.
This allows your sales team to prioritise late-stage buyers who are ready to hear a quote and book an install. No more wasting all your sales efforts nurturing uncommitted leads who are still a long way off from making a purchase.
Do they have genuine need and intent to buy?
Perhaps the most crucial part of the lead qualifying process is making sure that leads have a genuine want, need or intent to buy. It’s how we filter out the window-shoppers from legitimate customers.
To do this, we verify that the lead has an immediate problem to solve or desire to purchase. We can identify pain points quickly for urgent repair and replacement jobs – it’s simply a case of what needs fixing and why, or identifying the reason behind wanting your products.
But when it comes to things like solar panels, ASHP, and bathroom / kitchen renovations, we dig deeper.
We separate interest from real intent by trying to understand the why behind the enquiry. This takes many forms, from understanding where they are in the buyer journey to identifying pain points, evaluating timeframes, and looking at other engagement signals that prove intent.

What’s the difference between a MQL and a SQL?
Chances are, you’ve heard the terms “marketing-qualified lead” and “sales-qualified lead” thrown around. They’re both relevant to the lead qualification process for marketing and sales teams, so let’s quickly define them.
- Marketing-qualified lead: A lead who’s shown interest in your company by interacting with marketing materials, but isn’t quite ready to make a purchase yet.
- Sales-qualified lead: A lead with the budget, resources, and intent to buy, ready to talk to your sales team and close a deal.
At Sales Fuel, we aim to only send you SQLs. This means that the leads we send have expressed clear, proven intent to make a purchase.
